Biography

Joan Miró (1893-1983)

Joan Miró was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and designer.Miró invented an instantly recognisable visual language of playful signs and symbols based on the surrealist principle of freeing the creative power of the unconscious mind from the constraints of reason and logic.  Despite its playful line and colourful palette of primary colours, much of Miró’s work responded to the effects of the Spanish Civil War, which forced him to leave Spain for Paris in 1936 where he lived until 1940 when the German occupation forced him to return to Spain.
