Stephen Graham constructs dazzling three-dimensional artworks from metal pins, each individually crowned with vibrant crystals. In this intricate and precise process, he transforms clusters of exquisite, jewelled pins into iconic images of objects, logos and symbols from the pop art repertoire. Drawing influence from pop culture imagery, Graham reworks familiar visual language into bold contemporary compositions filled with colour, structure and unapologetic sparkle.
These three-dimensional works, which he refers to as ‘Pop Crystalism’, blend luxury materials, pop iconography and meticulous craftsmanship in a style that can be described as a meeting of Pop Art and precision engineering. Through a highly detailed and exacting process, each crystal acts like a pixel of light, texture and colour, creating artworks that shimmer with movement, depth and energy.
Alongside these sculptural works, Graham also creates shimmering paintings on paper in his ‘INK’D’ series, using acrylic inks, spray paint and spontaneous brushwork that balances control with unpredictability. Finished with diamond dust, the works possess a luminous quality that enhances their atmosphere, movement and expressive energy.
After graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2003, Stephen began to develop his unique vision as an artist and designer in the art and creative industries. He made his mark in several disciplines and sectors both in London, where he started out, and in his home country of South Africa. He implemented a process of what he calls ‘experiential design’, working in the fields of décor, fashion and lifestyle with magazines, theatre, TV, cinema and events. His novel and imaginative approach to creative design has informed his innovative artworks which, over the last decade, have become highly sought after collector’s pieces. He has undertaken commissions from notable companies and private collectors.
