Andrew Tozer Biography

Andrew Tozer is one of Cornwall's most celebrated landscape painters. Preferring to paint ‘en plein’ air’ - out on location – whenever possible, Tozer portrays those subjects which have meaning for him personally; from boats at rest in a picturesque Cornish harbour to figures gazing out across a windswept shore, he effortlessly captures the light, atmosphere and sense of place in each tranquil moment. Tozer studied art at the University of Westminster before moving on to Central St. Martin’s. In London he consolidated his love of plein air painting on the banks of the Thames at Richmond and Kew, and when he moved back to Cornwall in 1998 he had established an impressive reputation with a series of sell out exhibitions. He says: “I am increasingly able to hold a sense of place within me. By this I mean the feeling of the place, the conditions prevailing at the time, and how they will inevitably dictate how a painting is going to be made. Holding this feeling frees me up from being too literal.”

Tozer’s collectors include author Rosamunde Pilcher and Lord Hutton of Furness, and the Falmouth Art Gallery holds two of his paintings in their permanent collection.

Tozer’s They have been successfully exhibited in exclusive galleries across the UK for many years and are now making an impact in the international arena.

“I consider myself a diarist; recording the moments and scenes that are important to me and sharing my joy in them with the viewer.”
