INTRODUCING

CHARMAINE CHANAKIRA

CHARMAINE CHANAKIRA USES HER EXPRESSIVE NARRATIVE ART TO RESPOND TO HER EXPERIENCES AS A BLACK WOMAN BORN IN ZIMBABWE AND NOW LIVING IN LONDON.

Sometimes the story she tells is deeply personal, but at other times the narrative is broader, as she explores an emotional reaction to the wider world of politics, social justice or contemporary culture.

This dynamic and talented artist has been well-received at galleries and fairs in London and repeatedly described as ‘one to watch’ as well as being named the Saatchi Director’s Choice. We are delighted to introduce her work to the wider public.

THE HERO'S ARC

39 x 47”, Original Painting on Box Canvas

Chanakira paints ‘big and bright’ as a means of commanding attention for the things she cares about without having to take centre stage in person. She describes herself as an introvert who uses art to express her extrovert side and tell the truth – her truth.

VALIANT

39 x 47”, Original Painting on Box Canvas

Working in a combination of acrylic paint, oil pastels and pen, Chanakira draws on primitivism and symbolism to create an intriguing encounter with colour, texture and form in her intensely emotional paintings.

USER BUSY

36 x 48”, Original Painting on Box Canvas

“I found that painting carried me away to a place where I was calm, safe and unjudged. I wasn’t bound to create something perfect; I didn’t have to colour within the lines. I travelled to a place where I was face to face with my feelings and confronted them with every brush stroke.”
